A surprise smash hit, both onstage and as two feature films, this tribute to female friendships boasts an irresistible stream of ABBA pop songs, plus nice roles for four leading men, as well. Unlike the more abstract visual approach of the original stage show, the designers of this smartly packaged production very specifically evoke the beauty of an unspoiled Greek island, with a charming taverna, seen from a variety of different angles, with the beckoning blue sea ever present. Extremely easy to truck and to set up, this attractive collection of set, props, and costumes, helps to make MAMMA MIA! a consistently joyful experience.
Full production created in 2016, with sets by J Branson, designed to evoke the physical beauty of the Greek islands in 1999, and the architecture of a taverna, as seen from many viewpoints (outside front of building, on sides of structure, in central courtyard, alongside beach, and in Donna’s bedroom). Scene design includes two full-stage drops and two mylar rain curtains.
