Secret Garden, The

Based on the classic children’s novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, this atmospheric show tells the story of orphaned Mary Lenox, who is sent away from India to live in the manor of a brooding uncle whom she has never met in Yorkshire, England, where her personality blossoms as she brings life to a long-neglected garden. Beautiful choral arrangements enhance the poetic and highly melodic score, and the mysteries of the story are beautifully reflected in the show’s musical elements.

Scenery

In contrast to the original Broadway version, which was set in a large Victorian dollhouse, this edition is less literal and more evocative, with isolated scenic elements used in various attractive combinations. The overall appearance of the show, designed by J Branson, suggests the illustrations in a children’s book which have come to life. This allows the production to condense or expand into a wide variety of auditoriums. The scenery morphs from sepia tones to color as it approaches the finale in the garden.
