Carousel

Rodgers and Hammerstein’s mature and complicated masterpiece is well served by a series of detailed and evocative backdrops (designed by Chuck O’Connor, painted by XuZheng He) which establish the New England locations for the story. In addition to looking like 1900s landscape paintings, each contains telling details (like polluting smokestacks from the distant mills where leading lady Julie Jordan works) to help enrich the layers of the story. All of the drops, most particularly the nocturnal view from the island picnic, take light beautifully.
