Freaky Friday (Disney's)
This 2018 stage adaptation of Mary Rodgers’ often-filmed body-switching comedy is greatly enriched by its contemporary updating, and by the wonderfully rich score created by Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey (Pulitzer Prize winners for Next to Normal). When a mom and her teenage daughter magically inhabit each other’s bodies for a day, each discovers unexpected things about the other. A surprisingly nuanced look at love, loss, and parenting, Freaky Friday is available in both a two-act version suitable for standard audiences, or a shortened one-act version which is geared more for a younger crowd. The set, props, and costume package designed by MTWichita works with either.
Scenery
Freaky Friday features a sleek and inventive design by J Branson, which is effective for either the full two act version of the show, or the one-act edition based on the TV film. The scenic package utilizes a series of two-sided rolling units which take the action into all the various locations required by the script. These paneled units are shifted in full view by actors in each scene. Hard furniture is rolled into place to complete each picture. Minimal flying units augment a few scenes, but can also be tracked onstage or pushed on.
