Little Shop of Horrors

Before they came to national prominence with their Disney classics, writers Howard Ashman and Alan Menken had a notable off-Broadway success with this clever and affectionate spoof of 1960s horror movies. Shy and nerdy Seymour works in a failing flower shop among the derelicts of Skid Row, and has a huge crush on his co-worker Audrey, an attractive girl with low self- esteem who is dating a sadistic dentist. Their world is up-ended with the arrival of a steadily growing, man-eating plant from outer space. As unlikely as this sounds for a musical, the show works wonderfully, and is a great choice for theaters looking for a smallish cast, performing a ghoulishly funny, infectiously tuneful rock’n’roll spoof.
