Rodgers and Hammerstein’s only original film score was written for the 1945 film State Fair, based on Phil Stong’s 1932 novel and the 1933 film. In this 1996 Broadway adaptation, the Frake family of Iowa prepares for various competitions at the upcoming Iowa State Fair, including Mom’s fruitcake recipe and Dad’s prize hog Blue Boy. Son Wayne and daughter Margy end up finding unexpected romance at the fair, and Dad wins a bet with his neighbor. There’s not a lot of plot in STATE FAIR, and virtually no suspense; but there’s a rich musical score including “A Grand Night for Singing,” “That’s for Me,” and the Academy Award winning “It Might As Well Be Spring.”
