Thoroughly Modern Millie
The 1967 film was a lighthearted spoof of 1920s films and musicals, and this 2002 stage adaptation follows a similar path, although with greater sensitivity to the Asian characters and a slightly more coherent plot. Millie Dillmount is an optimistic and determined girl from Salina, Kansas, who wants to pursue a career and marry a rich boss in 1920s Manhattan. A series of unexpected events pave the way for genuine romance and heroism, greatly enhanced by the amusing and tuneful score, combining vintage numbers from the 20s with great new songs like “Not for the Life of Me,” “Gimme, Gimme,” “What Do I Need with Love,” and “Forget About the Boy.”
