White Christmas

The most successful film of 1954 was the lighthearted extravaganza “White Christmas,” which created a thin plot about four singer-dancers hired to perform at a Vermont snow lodge, only to find no snow and no guests. The main purpose of the story, finally brought to the stage 50 years later, is to allow plenty of room for a cornucopia of Irving Berlin songs, including classic tunes like “Blue Skies,” “Let Yourself Go,” and “Let Me Sing and I’m Happy,” as well as songs specifically written for the 1954 film, including “Count Your Blessings,” “Sisters,” and “Snow.”

Scenery

An exceedingly attractive visual approach was taken by set designer Bruce Brockman to surround the characters and musical numbers of WHITE CHRISTMAS in an atmospheric and clearly theatrical manner. Painted in a style reminiscent of holiday greeting cards, the many locations - Army base, TV studio, dressing rooms, elegant night club, New England train car, Vermont lodge lobby, a converted barn for rehearsals and performance, etc. - are quickly and beautifully delivered.

Costumes

Debbie Roberts’ extensive costume package for this musical comedy includes a generous sampling of 1950-style TV variety show costumes and rehearsal wear, plus general day wear and night club attire for the large company, leading up an elaborate Christmas collection, with distinctively-patterned, hand-crafted sweaters, for the grand finale. The wardrobe for this production very handsomely evokes the feeling of the 1950s Technicolor movie musical.
